Day 1 — Casablanca → Rabat → Meknes

Arrive at Mohammed V International Airport. Your private driver guide meets you at arrivals and the journey begins immediately — no wasted time. Drive north to Morocco’s capital, Rabat (1 hr). Guided tour: the Hassan Tower — the great unfinished minaret of the 12th-century Almohad Caliph Yacoub al-Mansour, intended as the tallest minaret in the Islamic world and frozen mid-construction for 800 years — and the adjacent Mohammed V Mausoleum, a masterpiece of modern Alaouite court craftsmanship with its hand-carved cedarwood canopy and Royal Guard in traditional dress. Walk the Kasbah of the Udayas — a 12th-century Almohad fortress above the Atlantic estuary, its blue-and-white Andalusian lanes enclosing a garden of extraordinary peace and history. Walk through the ancient Chellah — a walled necropolis layering a Roman city (Sala Colonia, 1st century BC) beneath Marinid royal tombs (14th century AD), its minaret ruins colonized by nesting storks — one of the most evocative layered history sites in North Africa. Day 2 — Meknes → Volubilis → Fes

Begin with the monumental Bab Mansour gate — one of the finest ornamental gates in North Africa, its facade of intricate geometric tilework and carved cedarwood lintel framed by two enormous columns taken from Volubilis. Continue to the Heri es-Souani royal granaries and stables — a vast vaulted complex built to store enough grain for a 20-year siege and house 12,000 horses in individual stalls. Walk the Place el-Hedim and the Meknes medina. Lunch in Meknes. Afternoon drive to Volubilis (30 min) — Morocco’s finest Roman city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Moroccan plain. Walk the ancient forum, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla (217 AD), the Capitol, and the extraordinary floor mosaics — Orpheus charming the animals, Bacchus in his chariot, Diana and the Hunt — preserved for 1,800 years in remarkable color and detail. Brief stop at Moulay Idriss Zerhoun — Morocco’s holiest pilgrimage town, perched on twin volcanic hills above Volubilis, home to the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the great-great-grandson of the Prophet who brought Islam to Morocco in 789 AD. Day 3 — Fes — Full Guided City Tour

A complete guided day inside Fes el-Bali — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest living car-free urban area, its street plan and social organization unchanged since the 9th century. Your licensed local guide takes you through every layer of the medina: the Chouara Tanneries — the ancient leather dyeing complex, its stone vats of pigeon dung, saffron, poppy, and natural mineral dyes unchanged in method since the 12th century, best seen from the leather shop terraces above where the full honeycomb of color is visible; the Bou Inania Madrasa (1350–1357) — the finest example of Marinid religious architecture in Morocco, with extraordinary carved stucco panels, cedar lattice screens, and hand-cut zellij tilework covering every surface from floor to roofline; the Al-Attarine Madrasa — a 14th-century masterpiece of compressed magnificence built adjacent to the Kairaouine Mosque; the Kairaouine Mosque and University — founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, a woman from a Tunisian merchant family who endowed it with her entire inheritance, it is the oldest continuously operating university in the world, predating Oxford by over 200 years; the spice souk, the henna souk, the brass and copper market, and the Mellah — the ancient Jewish quarter with its 17th-century Ibn Danan synagogue and distinctive overhanging wooden balconies. Day 4 — Fes → Ifrane → Midelt → Merzouga Desert (7 hrs)

Early departure south from Fes into the Middle Atlas. First stop: the alpine town of Ifrane (1 hr from Fes) — built by the French colonists in the 1930s at 1,665m altitude in the style of a Swiss mountain village, with red-roofed chalets, pine-lined avenues, and a cool mountain clarity of air unlike any other city in Morocco. Continue to the cedar forests of Azrou — ancient Atlas cedars where Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) roam freely through the trees, one of the last wild populations of this endangered species outside of Gibraltar. Lunch in Midelt — the apple city of the Middle Atlas at 1,500m, surrounded by orchards and the first clear views of the desert ranges beyond, a comfortable midpoint on the long drive south. Continue across the high plateau and into the most dramatic passage of the day: the Ziz Gorge — the Ziz river has carved a deep canyon through the plateau, its walls lined with hundreds of thousands of date palms pressing close to the road in one of the most spectacular natural oasis corridors in North Africa. Emerge onto the pre-Saharan plain and drive east to Merzouga. Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon. Mount your camel for a guided sunset trek into the dunes — the Erg Chebbi rises to 150 meters above the desert floor, the light turning the sand through amber, copper, and deep red as you climb. Arrive at your luxury desert camp as the sky darkens and the stars emerge. Traditional Moroccan dinner by firelight with live Gnawa drumming under a sky of extraordinary depth and clarity.

Day 5 — Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorge

Wake before sunrise for the dawn over the Erg Chebbi — the silence and the slowly building light over the dunes is one of the most extraordinary experiences Morocco offers. Camel ride back to Merzouga village after breakfast. Morning stop in Rissani — the historic oasis capital of the Tafilalt and the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty that has ruled Morocco continuously since 1666. Visit the Rissani souk — one of the most authentic and atmospheric rural markets in all of Morocco, held on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with date sellers, leather goods, pottery, live animals, and the bustle of the entire surrounding oasis gathering to trade. Visit the Zaouia of Moulay Ali Cherif — the mausoleum of the Alaouite founding ancestor. Continue west through the palm oases and desert roads of the Tafilalt to the Todra Gorge — arrive in the afternoon, walk the canyon floor between towering 300m walls of pale orange limestone where the Todra river runs cold and clear through the narrow base of the gorge. Have tea in the gorge as the light changes on the canyon walls. Overnight in the gorge.

Day 6 — Todra Gorge → Dades Valley → Rose Valley → Skoura → Ait Ben Haddou

An extraordinary day of landscape transitions through the finest scenery in southern Morocco. Morning at the Todra Gorge at dawn — the canyon before the day visitors arrive, in the silence and the early light, is a different place entirely. After breakfast, drive west through the Dades Valley — stopping to walk into the Dades Gorge, a winding canyon of red and ochre rock formations sculpted into towers, fins, and organ-pipe columns of stone by the Dades River, with ancient kasbah villages perched above in the cliff face. Continue west through the Valley of Roses — the Dadès Valley floor planted with Damask roses (Rosa damascena) cultivated by Berber farming families for the global perfume industry: rows of deep pink blooms stretching from the road to the base of the Atlas, harvested entirely by hand each April and May. Stop at a local rose distillery and rose cooperative. Continue to Skoura — a vast 5,000-hectare date palm oasis in the Draa Valley, laced with ancient seguia irrigation channels and historic earthen kasbahs. Visit Kasbah Amridil — one of the most beautifully preserved kasbahs in Morocco, partially inhabited by the same family that built it in the 17th century, surrounded by palms and a profound silence. Continue west to the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a fortified ksar of earthen towers rising from the desert plain, used as a location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and dozens more. Day 7 — Ait Ben Haddou → High Atlas → Marrakech (3.5 hrs)

Morning free near Ait Ben Haddou — the kasbah in the early morning, before the day visitors from Ouarzazate arrive, has a stillness and a quality of light that the afternoon crowds never see. Optional visit to Ouarzazate: Atlas Film Studios and Kasbah Taourirt for those who did not visit yesterday. Depart northwest and begin the ascent of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) — Morocco’s highest paved road, a spectacular serpentine route through the High Atlas with panoramic views of jagged peaks, deep gorges, and traditional Berber villages of dark schist stone perched on the ridgelines. At the summit, the entire character of Morocco changes — the ochre desert south gives way to the green northern slopes above the Marrakech plain. Descend through the foothills into the Haouz plain. Arrive in Marrakech in the early afternoon. Check into your riad in the medina. Afternoon free to explore independently — the Djemaa el-Fna, the souks, the Majorelle Garden, or a traditional hammam. The Djemaa el-Fna at night — its first full experience after a week in the desert and the mountains — is one of the most vivid contrasts in all of Moroccan travel.

Day 8 — Marrakech — Full Guided City Tour

A complete guided day in Marrakech — the Red City, Morocco’s most legendary urban experience. Morning with your licensed local medina guide: the Djemaa el-Fna — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site, the world’s greatest open-air theatre, alive with storytellers, acrobats, snake charmers, musicians, and food stall operators who have worked these cobblestones for generations; the Koutoubia Mosque (1158 AD) — its 70-meter minaret the architectural model for the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville; the Bahia Palace — a 19th-century vizier’s palace of 160 rooms with hand-painted cedarwood ceilings, marble courtyard fountains, and garden courtyards of bougainvillea and orange trees representing the peak of Moroccan court craftsmanship; the Saadian Tombs — the royal mausoleum sealed for two centuries by Sultan Moulay Ismail and rediscovered in 1917, with Italian Carrara marble and extraordinary carved stucco; and the medina souks — each craft in its traditional street: the spice souk, the dyers’ souk, the silver souk, the carpet market, the lantern souk. Day 9 — Marrakech → Casablanca Airport (2.5 hrs)

After breakfast, depart Marrakech and drive north to Casablanca Mohammed V Airport — approximately 2.5 hours via the motorway through the Haouz and Chaouia plains. Your driver guide drops you at international departures with comfortable time for afternoon or evening international flights. Optional morning: if your flight departs in the late afternoon or evening, we can arrange a final Marrakech morning activity — a cooking class, a visit to the Mellah Jewish quarter, or the Musée Yves Saint Laurent — before departing for Casablanca.
