Riad are The Heart of Moroccan Living

What is Riad Means in Morocco. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central interior courtyard or garden. The word comes from the Arabic ryad, meaning garden. Unlike Western homes that face outward, a riad turns inward — its beauty hidden behind plain walls. Step through the door and the world transforms entirely. The courtyard is the soul of the home, featuring a fountain, fruit trees, fragrant jasmine, and intricate tilework, with every room opening onto this private garden.

300 Years of Architecture & Charm

The riad dates back to the Moorish and Andalusian era, more than three centuries ago. Artisans brought geometric zellige tilework, carved cedarwood ceilings, and ornate plasterwork — a tradition that merged with Berber craftsmanship to produce the riad as we know it. By the 17th century, riads defined the medinas of Fes, Marrakech, Meknes, and Rabat. The exterior always remained modest — a plain wall, a heavy wooden door. All the beauty was saved for within.

Riads & History Morocco Tours

At History Morocco Tours, we place you inside this living heritage. We select authentic riad accommodations throughout your journey — because waking up in a 200-year-old riad in the Fes medina is an experience no modern hotel can replicate. Our guides bring these spaces to life, explaining the history carved into every wall.  Morocco’s beauty is not in its museums. It is in its courtyards and its riads.

What Is a Kasbah in Morocco?

A kasbah is a fortified residence or citadel, traditionally built from red-brown mud brick and earth. The word comes from Arabic, meaning fortress or stronghold. In Morocco, kasbahs were home to tribal chiefs, military commanders, and powerful families who needed both shelter and a show of strength.

From the outside, a kasbah rises like a small castle — thick earthen walls, tall square towers, and narrow windows. Inside, it holds a labyrinth of rooms, stables, storage, and living quarters designed to house an entire extended family and their household.

The most spectacular kasbahs in Morocco line the ancient caravan routes of the south — the Draa Valley, the Dades Gorge, and the road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga. Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most famous example and has appeared in dozens of Hollywood films.

At History Morocco Tours, our private guides take you inside these living monuments — not just past them. The kasbahs of southern Morocco are among the most dramatic and photogenic places on earth, and every one has a story worth hearing.
